We are still hiking on the border of Tennessee and North Carolina. We are having a blast! Today was very rainy with a few thunderheads, so we took a short cut to Erwin, TN. We will get back to the trail to complete what we skipped on this shortcut.

We are learning to carry just enough food to get to the next resupply opportunity. Food is very heavy. Right now our packs weigh about 40 some pounds with 6 days of food and 3-4 liters of water. We carry more water than most hikers, but we drink it by the end of the day. When we carry 3 days of food our packs are around 35 lbs or less! It sounds small, but it is a big difference!

We rarely get to spend much time, if any, online so we do not update this very often. We try to tell the story with the pictures which we send back when we run through towns. Soon you will be able to see photos from Gatlinburg, TN to Erwin, TN. So the first half will be in the Great Smoky Mountains. After Davenport Gap starting with Lani shaving all the hair off one of our fellow hikers, at her request, we are mostly on the TN/NC stateline.

We love to get snail mail at our town stops about the stuff you are all doing. We will try to respond as quickly as we can.

9:00pm is "Hiker Midnight" and we are ususually in bed before dark. It is way past our bedtime...

It is a good Life!

Suzi Lani

Pre Trip Preparation

We are almost ready to head out for the Appalachian
Trail.
